There's nothing more inspiring than hearing about famous people who used to live on the street or get booed out of parliament but are now so rich, that they could afford to use $100 bills as Kleenex tissues. (Or have their likeness carved out of a 38,000-ton lump of Georgia marble, as is the case with our first failure-to-success story ... )

1. U.S. President Abraham Lincoln

While today he is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of the United States, Lincoln’s life had more cul-de-sacs than an affluent white suburb. In his youth, he went to war as a captain and returned a private, which is as low as you can rank in the military and the opposite of what you're supposed to do (i.e. get promoted). But that was just the beginning.

He started numerous failed businesses, went bankrupt twice, and was defeated in 26 of the campaigns he made for public office. While President Lincoln's personal story didn't have a happy ending, his presidency changed the course of history for the United States and the millions of people who were forcibly brought here as slaves.
