How to protect the kidney from stones?


Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that form inside your kidneys and can cause excruciating pain when they pass through your urinary tract. To prevent kidney stones, here are some tips:

Drink plenty of water and fluids, at least eight glasses per day or enough to pass two liters of urine. This helps to dilute the urine and dissolve the salts that cause stones.

Eat calcium-rich foods, such as low-fat dairy products, legumes, dark green vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Calcium binds to oxalate, a substance that can form stones, in the stomach and intestines before it reaches the kidneys.
Avoid or limit foods that are high in sodium, oxalate, or animal protein. These include processed foods, salty snacks, spinach, chocolate, beets, rhubarb, soy products, beef, poultry, fish, and pork. These foods can increase the levels of calcium, oxalate, or uric acid in the urine, which can promote stone formation.

If you have a history of kidney stones, talk to your doctor about medications or supplements that may help prevent them. Some examples are potassium citrate, thiazide diuretics, allopurinol, and vitamin
