Patriotism is a meme that is as silly as religion. It starts with the assumption that one geographical location and culture is somehow inherently preferable to others.
The only quintessential human quality that separates us from many "animals" is the sense of empathy for one's fellow humans. And sometimes it spills over to be empathetic to other living beings.

Patriotism, communalism, religion, etc. are ideas put forth by the powerful to control hoi polloi. They succeed well in controlling the mindless masses, as easily as advertising controls the wealthy...
The bottom line can we continue to be patriotic despite the corrupt leadership
