Who was your most influential teacher? Why?
The most influential teacher for me was a 7th grade English teacher who also happened to be a Catholic nun.
She was the teacher that saw I had a gift for writing. Of course she taught the content and was a pretty demanding instructor as well as a tough grader. Her approach was serious, and sincere with high expectations. While many other boys at the time disliked her as well as the subject matter, I was taken by the fact that she was incredibly capable, competent, and a gifted reader and writer herself. I had nothing but respect for her. When she pulled me aside one day and told me she loved to read my papers and that I was a very good writer, my pride, self-esteem, and motivation exploded in the best way.
When reading a piece of literature, she would always point out what a great writer technically did to create a powerful piece. I am still grateful for this woman’s dedication to the art of teaching, deep knowledge of her content area and encouragement of a kid who really needed it at the time
