Describe something you learned in high school.
I'm going to have to cheat here because there were actually two hugely important things that I learned in High School (we call it Secondary school) and I couldn't decide which was more important. Important Life Event No. 1 I was 11 years old and up until then I was a child that pretty much did what he was told. I never questioned, I never went against what adults said. I ALWAYS did what I was told. It was inconceivable for me to ever disobey the person in charge. However, early in the school year I was in History class and the teacher (Mr Walsgrove) asked "What year was the Battle of Hastings?" Every hand shot up and one guy was picked. He answered "1066" (the right answer). But Mr Walsgrove replied "Are you sure?". Every hand dropped down. Clearly 1066 must be wrong if the teacher was questioning it. The student replied that he was no longer sure and the question was repeated. This time no one put their hand up. Mr Walsgrove then confirmed that 1066 was the right answer and asked the first student why he had changed his mind. Student: ''Because you asked me if I was sure. I thought it was wrong.'' Mr Walsgrove: ''Well you were right. Why didn't you stick up for your answer?'' Student: ''Uhhhh... I dunno'' (Mr Walsgrove now addresses the entire class) Mr Walsgrove: You know, teachers can get answers wrong... I can get answers wrong. If you think you have the right answer, then say so.'' He then spent the rest of the lesson asking us questions and everytime someone answered, he would ask ''Are you sure?'' And the student/class would shout back ''YES!'' I know that this seems like a very unimportant moment, but for me it was life changing. In one fell swoop I had learned one thing...
