Here is a framework for evaluating the success of social media content and using key metrics to optimize future strategies:
The primary metrics I prioritize for measuring social media success include:
1. Engagement Rate - Likes, comments, shares, saves, and clicks relative to total post impressions or reach. Engagement rate measures how actively the audience is interacting with the content. Higher engagement suggests the content is resonating.
2. Reach & Impressions - The number of unique people who saw the content (reach) and total number of views (impressions). This measures how many people the content is getting in front of. Increasing reach and impressions expands the audience.
3. Audience Growth - The net new followers or subscribers gained over time. Audience growth reflects if the overall social media efforts are attracting more people to the brand. Faster audience growth is a positive sign.
4. Traffic & Conversions - Sessions, pageviews and goal conversions driven from social referral traffic. This connects social media to bottomline website KPIs and business results. More traffic and conversions means social is directly impacting the business.
5. Sentiment & Brand Lift - How social media is shaping brand perceptions and sentiment through comments, conversations, and brand surveys. Positive sentiment and perception shifts show social is improving the brand image.
To evaluate success, I look at these metrics at both an individual content level and overall channel/account level. Individual content metrics pinpoint top/bottom performing posts to glean insights on the content attributes, topics, formats and tactics that work best.
Channel level metrics provide a high-level progress report on how social media efforts are moving the needle in expanding reach, growing an engaged audience, driving business results and improving brand sentiment over time. Together, this micro and macro view uncovers valuable insights.
Those learnings and insights then inform future social media strategies. Based on the data, we double down on the highest performing content themes, formats and tactics. Experiments that show promise get further optimization. And underperforming ideas are phased out or reworked.
The metrics also highlight opportunities to test new strategic directions in order to keep improving results. Perhaps gaming content is working well, so we explore launching on Twitch. Or perhaps videos are getting the most engagement, so we test a YouTube series.
By diligently monitoring this framework of key success metrics, deriving actionable insights from the data, and applying those learnings to optimize the social media strategy, we can continuously adapt and improve the approach to maximize results and business value over time. The metrics light the path forward.
